1. Confirm Wi-Fi settings are turned on

6. Check if the system is up to date

When out of date, there may be malfunctions due to some software error. So make sure your Android or iOS is up to date.
On Android, follow the path: Configure → System → Advanced → System Update. If you are up to date, you will see the information Your system is up to date.
On iOS, go to Settings → General → Software Update. If there is no notification, it is a sign that it is up to date.
7. See if the router/modem is turned on
Another simple but functional rule. If you're not using a public network (or if you can ask the local administration), make sure the modem is turned on or working properly.
Also check if your smartphone is within range of the signal and if, by any chance, it is using the wrong password. If possible, check if other devices can connect to the Wi-Fi network.
