What is courage and how important is it to you?

What is courage? According to the dictionary:

Courage: 1. Strong morale in the face of danger, risks, bravery and intrepidity. Firmness of mind, to face emotionally or morally difficult situation. 2. Quality of one who has greatness of soul, nobility of character, manhood. 3. Determination in the performance of a necessary activity; zeal, perseverance, tenacity.

All these are definitions of the word courage, which at various times in our lives people tell us to have, to take risks. Do you really know what the word courage means?

What is courage?

According to the dictionary, to have courage is to have perseverance, to have manhood, to face your challenges. But once I heard a phrase from Miguel Cavalcante, a person I like a lot, he says the following:

Courage is not the absence of fear, but acting in spite of it.

Courage is taking action even with that butterflies in your stomach, or with all the reasons in the world not to take the next step. A courageous person is not the one who doesn't feel anything, but the one who, despite being afraid, goes ahead.

Whenever I'm going to give a talk, people ask me if I'm nervous, and I answer them: Of course I am! As long as I'm nervous, with butterflies in my stomach, it's a sign that I care about what I'm doing, which is still a challenge for me.

As soon as that doesn't happen anymore and I go on stage to give a lecture without feeling anything, it's a sign that it's no longer a challenge for me and I'm simply fulfilling the schedule.
